Why is beef tallow good for skin?

Beef tallow has a fatty acid profile that is incredibly close to skin’s natural protective barrier and oils. Beef tallow is loaded with goodness and fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K. Tallow is easily absorbed and utilized because of its similarities to skin’s natural sebum.

What is the main benefit of beef tallow for skin?

The absolute best quality of beef tallow for skin is that is it low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The fat content of beef tallow is almost all saturated and monounsaturated fat and there are hardly any polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs). So beef tallow is incredibly resistant to oxidation (the opposite of PUFAs). Beef tallow offers a long list of beneficial minerals and compounds while being completely natural and virtually untouched by toxins, especially compared modern skincare.

What are PUFAs and why are they bad for skin?

A healthy skin barrier is crucial for healthy skin. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) weaken the skin barrier because they are prone to quickly oxidize in air and light (and the sun!!), which can lead to further skin damage, dryness and increased sensitivity. Our modern diets are also high in “seed oils” (high PUFA oils like sunflower, canola, soy, etc.) that our skin cells are already overwhelmed with omega-3 and omega-6, and the ratio of omega-6 is also not proportionate and too high. So we already have too many of these oxidizing oils in our skin cells.

Does beef tallow clog pores, is beef tallow comedogenic?

No beef tallow is non-comedogenic, it will not clog your pores. It shares an almost identical fatty acid profile to skin’s natural sebum. Beef tallow is considered to have a rating of 2 on the comedogenic scale, which is considered low.

Will tallow cause my skin to break out?

Tallow will not likely cause your skin to break out, although, it is possible because all skin is different and has different needs. Tallow contains many beneficial properties that can actually help with acne and the healing of active breakouts.

Is beef tallow a retinol alternative?

Although beef tallow contains vitamin A, it is not the same as retinol. A natural alternative to retinol that increases cell turnover and collagen production is bakuchiol. Bakuchiol can be found in our Bakuchiol serum.

Is beef tallow good for Eczema or Psoriasis?

Yes, this is one of tallow’s best benefits. Beef tallow is incredibly nourishing, it is easily absorbed by the skin and it is utilized well because of its similar biology to skin’s oils. It works in harmony with skin’s biology and rich in beneficial antioxidants and skin-loving fatty acids (while being very low in quickly-oxidizing PUFAs)

Does beef tallow skincare smell like beef?

No! Our tallow is meticulously rendered from leaf suet, the fat found around the kidneys, which is not to be confused with the trim fat of beef that is found when you fry up hamburger (that would be stinky!). Our tallow is also slow rendered multiple times to reduce impurities. Well-rendered beef tallow for skincare will not stink! (No hamburger-smelling skin here!!)

What kind of beef tallow is used by OWN SKIN CO?

The tallow that we use in all OWN skincare products are from grass fed AND finished animals. Meaning, they have only been fed grass their entire lives. Our farmers are committed to a strict "no pesticide" policy, so the grass that they are fed is also natural and healthy for them. Research shows that grass fed AND finished beef tallow is also lower in PUFAs. Grass finished beef tallow is not only more natural and nutritionally dense, but grass is best for the cows!

Is tallow skincare safe for babies?

Yes, tallow is the cleanest skincare you will find on planet earth. Is contains so many beneficial vitamins and compounds for skin without any parabens, phthalates, petroleum-based ingredients, silicones, sulphates, and more! Our baby skincare is completely unscented and a little goes a long way, so tallow lasts much longer and goes a lot further than traditional diaper creams too!

What’s the shelf life of tallow skincare?

OWN SKIN COs tallow skincare has a shelf life of at least one year or more. Our formulations are developed without water and no preservatives are needed. Tallow can last much longer than 1 year as long as no contaminants are introduced into the jar.

Does beef tallow contain SPF?

No, tallow skincare is not sunscreen. Tallow has some very minor spf qualities, but nothing that will prevent sunburn or protect the skin from the sun. Sunscreen can be made to include tallow as an ingredient but tallow doesn’t replace a SPF sunscreen.
