Tallow Questions

What is tallow?

The tallow in OWN skin care is rendered from 100% grass fed + finished Canadian beef suet. Tallow is an animal fat from beef that is rendered into a pure white, solid fat. Here at OWN SKIN CO we only use tallow rendered from the leaf suet (the only suitable fat for skincare that is found around the kidneys). Our tallow is meticulously rendered so that it has no beefy smell. Tallow is filled with an abundance of vitamins + minerals and it is completely natural + scentless. Why is beef tallow good for skin?

It is packed with nutrients that our skin needs to stay healthy, soft and youthful.

Tallow is compatible with our skin cell biology, containing mostly saturated and monounsaturated fats, which aligns with our skin cell makeup. Beef tallow is also very low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are common in “seed” oils like sunflower and safflower, which are not a good fit for skin because they oxidize quickly (causing further damage to skin).

Skin is able to use beef tallow so effectively because tallow shares a very similar biology to the oil that our skin naturally produces, so it won’t clog pores and the natural antimicrobial properties in tallow help to prevent acne and breakouts, while strengthening the skin barrier.

Tallow is also very soothing and healing, making it amazing for skin ailments like eczema and psoriasis.

Does tallow skincare smell?

No!! We render our tallow from a specific type of fat (suet) called leaf fat, that is found around the kidneys inside the grass fed & finished beef. Our tallow is meticulously rendered multiple times to remove any impurities and to prevent any sort of "beefy" odour (this is not to be confused with “deodorized” tallow, which has been treated with chemicals to remove any sort of scent, we take no part in artificially altering what’s natural).

We find our tallow to be practically scentless. Some of our customers have described our nude/unscented tallow as having a very light scent similar to butter. It's quite amazing, really (I mean, there are so many incredible reasons to love tallow), but there is no worry that you'll be walking around smelling like a fresh batch of hamburger patties...thankfully, that's not the type of fat we're rendering for our tallow skincare.

If you are worried about any sort of tallow scent, please choose one of our scented items! The bonus being that all of our scented items are quite delicious (and free from any artificial fragrances).

Is OWN SKIN CO. skincare made in Canada?

Yes, we are so proud that all of our products are formulated, manufactured and bottled/packaged in Canada by Canadians. Our ingredients are sourced within Canada and many of our ingredients are made in Canada or grown in Canada as well!

We do our best to source our raw materials, jars and bottles, packaging, print and paper products locally. We try to support other amazing Canadian businesses as much as we can!


The beef tallow (rendered suet) that we use is sourced from a collective of Canadian ranchers. They raise their animals as nature intended, feeding them grass their entire lives and by using regenerative farming techniques, with no pesticides (just as nature intended)!!

Is tallow vegan?

No, tallow is not vegan. It is rendered from the leaf fat of cows. Our products are not tested on animals. You can find more info here.

Why is it important that tallow is from grass fed animals?

The tallow that we use in all OWN skincare products are from grass fed AND finished animals. Meaning, they have only been fed grass their entire lives. Our farmers are committed to a strict "no pesticide" policy, so the grass that they are fed is also natural and healthy for them.

This not only makes the tallow more natural and nutritionally dense, but tallow from grass def and finished animals is also lower in PUFAs compared to grain fed beef (source). There's also no worry of contamination from common allergens like soy, corn, wheat, etc.

Grass fed and finished is really important to us, not only for the quality of tallow that we're putting on our skin and our family's skin, but also grass is best for the cows!

What types of farms have the cows been raised on?

The beef tallow (rendered suet) that we use is sourced from a collective of small, Canadian ranchers that have a strict “no pesticide policy”. They all raise their animals just as nature intended, using regenerative farming techniques.

All of the cows are pasture raised as much as possible and they are 100% grass fed and finished, meaning, they have been fed ONLY grass their entire lives. This is the healthiest for the cows and as a result the tallow is more nutritionally dense and free from pesticides and common allergens like soy, corn, wheat, etc.

What tallow product is best for my skin?

OWN skincare is perfect for normal and acne prone skin as well as soothing dry and sensitive skin, eczema and other skin ailments.

Please contact us for specific skin concerns, so we can tailor products for your unique needs!

For face skincare, our selection of serums and whips are where you want to start. Tallow Whip is a fluffy daily moisturizer for all skin types and our Nude balm is a more concentrated version of that. Our tallow serum is a gentle, unscented, soothing serum perfect for sensitive skin. Our Bakuchiol serum is a retinol-alternative serum that reduces fine lines while being well-tolerated even for sensitive skin. We have face skincare bundles to take out the guess work, these are simple staples that will replace your entire existing routine!

If you're looking for an easy application for your entire body, we suggest our tallow Whip or our luxurious body oil. You also can't go wrong with our tallow scrub! Both our whip and body oils make an amazing moisturizer and stretch mark reducer for growing pregnant bellies!

For the men, all of our men's items are specifically made for the needs of a simple man!

For baby bodies, bums, faces, rough patches, etc. we have an entire line of super clean, natural tallow based baby skincare!

For extra healing properties for rashes, eczema, psoriasis, scrapes, minor burns, etc. we suggest our BETTER Balm.

And for lips, you can't go wrong with our Lip Balms - these are packed with powerhouse ingredients in one little tube. They not only moisturize and nourish deeply, but they also help to protect from the elements. But be warned, once you try tallow lip balm, you'll never go back!

Is tallow only for dry skin?

OWN skincare is perfect for normal and acne prone skin as well as soothing dry and sensitive skin, eczema and other skin ailments.

Is tallow skincare recommended for sensitive skin?

Most of our products are formulated with sensitive skin in mind. This is one of the best selling features of Tallow. It is extremely gentle and very soothing for sensitive skin!

For the most sensitive of skin, we recommend starting with our Tallow Serum, Nude Whip, Nude Balm or Better Balm. All are made with simple, yet powerhouse ingredients, are completely unscented and don't contain any essential oils. Our Vanilla Whip is also well tolerated by sensitive skin because it is a pure vanilla extract, not an essential oil. However, if sensitive to scents, stick with nude! If you are sensitive to Jojoba oil, try the Tallow Baby Balm or Whip instead, it is made with pure, organic Olive Oil instead!

Our Tallow Face Serum is also made for sensitive skin, packed with skin-soothing ingredients and completely unscented.

Does tallow help with Acne?

Many of our customers have had amazing success with tallow for their acne. A few reasons why tallow may improve acne:

Tallow is naturally high in vitamins A, D, K, E & B12, all of which have amazing properties for skin. It is incredibly healing and speeds the healing of broken skin.

Tallow is also non-comedogenic, meaning that it won't clog pores. It has a very very similar makeup to our own skin's oil so it can naturally help balance oil production.

It is also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which is huge for acne prone skin!

What do you mean by "no nasties"?

All of the skincare at OWN SKIN CO. is formulated without the use of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs), which are highly processed, quick to oxidize, inflammatory oils (oils like sunflower, safflower, sweet almond, soy, canola, etc.).

OWN products also don't contain any artificial fragrance oils (yuck!). We only include natural ingredients that are healthy for you and your skin. Our skincare is made from 100% natural ingredients; truly healing and healthy.

What’s the difference between tallow whip and tallow balm?

Whip has a fluffy, velvety feel to it and is perfect to use as a daily moisturizer on your face or for larger parts of your body - it spreads beautifully. It's also light enough to use on your face before makeup.

Balm is more concentrated, more suited for an overnight face moisturizer or for spots that need extra nourishment like eczema patches, elbows, heals, diaper rash, etc!

What’s the difference between the Nude Tallow Balm and Tallow Better Balm?

Nude Balm is completely unscented, it's a more concentrated version of our whip. It's a great concentrated face moisturizer, good for babies, stretch marks, scars, rough skin (think heels, knees, elbows) and any other areas that need extra moisturizing.

Better Balm contains a healing herbal infusion of Calendula and Chickweed, is meant for areas that need extra healing properties...like minor rashes, cuts, burns, scrapes, eczema, psoriasis, bug bites and other skin irritations!

Are OWN products safe for pregnancy, nursing and babies?

Yes our skincare is natural and made with extremely clean ingredients (the absolute best on planet earth). We suggest using our Baby Whip/Balm, Baby Oil, NUDE Balm or Whip, Tallow Serum, or Better Balm (all are completely unscented & no essential oils) for pregnant & nursing moms and for babies/kids. Our ingredients are simple and clean. Look at the ingredients of the products your currently using...we're pretty sure you'll switch to OWN tallow!

Tallow Baby is a favourite for mom's growing baby belly, sore nipples, and as a pumping lubricant. It's a go-to for clean and safe baby moisturizer and diaper balm! Our Tallow Baby Whip and Balm is made with organic olive oil instead of Jojoba, making it completely edible (although we don't recommend eating it), so there's no worry if baby is putting hands, arms, feet, etc. in his or her mouth after the whip or balm is applied!

Do you have any skincare items that are made without Tallow?

Yes, our Bakuchiol Face Serum is tallow-free and vegan. But it is meant to be used in conjunction with tallow for the most benefits!

What is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a plant derived, natural Retinol alternative, that functions very similarly to Retinol - but it's tolerated much better, even for sensitive skin. Bakuchiol increases cell turnover, stimulates collagen production and it has the amazing properties of decreasing fine lines, firming skin and decreasing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Backuchiol has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Used along with Beef Tallow, they make one powerhouse duo.

How long does beef tallow skincare last?

All of our beef tallow skincare items have a shelf life of at least a year from purchase. Some are more. There is a little jar icon on each product label with the amount of months it will be good for. Many of our products can last longer as long as no water or contaminants are added to the product/jar.

As for how long you'll be able to use each item before needing more, will depend on how often you are using them and how much you are using. Tallow skincare goes a VERY long way, meaning you only need a little to accomplish a lot. For example, our face serums are recommended to use only 1-2 drops on your face per application, so one bottle will last quite awhile! Whips and balms only need a pea sized amount for your face as well. Using it on larger parts of your body, it will get used up quicker.

Should I keep tallow skincare in the fridge?

No, we don't suggest keeping your OWN skincare in the fridge or freezer. OWN tallow skincare is best kept at room temperature. Tallow will become more firm in cooler temps. However, please also protect your whip from heat or it will melt.

My tallow products have changed consistency, is this normal?

Tallow is a completely natural product, so it can change consistency depending on the environment around it.

Our skincare may become softer in a warmer environment and more firm in a cooler environment.

If your Whip melts, it is still 100% usable, it will just be more concentrated. If it gets cold and firms up, it is also 100% usable, just work between your fingers to warm it up before applying.

Our balms can also change consistency slightly when exposed to varying temperatures, they can become softer in the summer and more firm in the winter. They can also become grainy if they get too cold or freeze (even though they are still perfectly usable) - it's an easy fix! Please contact us and we'll help you get your balms back to their perfect consistency!

*Please note, tallow skincare can melt in the summer heat if packages are left on the porch or mailbox. We do not offer refunds or replacement for melted product. However, if your products do melt, please contact us and we can help bring your skincare back to its perfect consistency. If whips melt in the heat, they will become the consistency of the tallow balm (they are still perfect to use, but the product will be more concentrated).

It is so important to us that tallow skincare is affordable and attainable for Canadians. As a result, we do not inflate our prices to account for sales or discounts (we don’t offer either, the price on our site will be the same today, tomorrow and on Black Friday). We truly believe in our tallow skincare and our prices are a reflection of the quality Canadian ingredients that we put into our handcrafted skincare!!

We know most of our customers are very price conscious (as are we!!) so we do our absolute best to keep our prices affordable, all while using good quality (and mostly Canadian) ingredients. Take into consideration as well that tallow skin care goes a very long way!! Our customers constantly mention this, that our products last for a very long time...because a little goes a long way when it comes to tallow!

What is your return policy?

We want you to be happy and satisfied with your new OWN products, however, due to the hygienic nature of OWN skin care products, we do not accept returns or exchanges. 

We offer some of our items in mini sampler sizes (and a mini set to try out multiple items) so that our products can be tried out with a smaller investment.
